Adding GST is simple: multiply by 1.1. Removing it is where people slip up. Taking 10% off a GST-inclusive price gives the wrong answer; you divide by 11 instead.

Calculation
GST$100.00
Price excluding GST$1,000.00
GST (10%)$100.00
Price including GST$1,100.00

Quick check: GST is one-eleventh of a GST-inclusive price.

How it's calculated

  • Add GST: price × 10% = GST; price × 1.1 = total.
  • Remove GST: total ÷ 11 = GST; total ÷ 1.1 = price excluding GST.

You must register for GST once your business turnover reaches $75,000 a year ($150,000 for non-profits), within 21 days. Taxi and rideshare drivers must register from their first dollar.
