Marginal rate 32% · average rate 20.2% of taxable income (income tax + Medicare levy).
Your take-home pay is your gross pay less three things: income tax, the Medicare levy, and any study loan repayment.
Income tax is worked out bracket by bracket on your taxable income. In 2026–27 the first $18,200 is tax-free, then 15% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000 and 45% above that.
Low income tax offset of up to $700 reduces tax for incomes under $66,667.
Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, reduced for low incomes. Without private hospital cover, singles earning over $105,000 also pay the Medicare levy surcharge of 1% to 1.5%.
HECS-HELP repayments start at $69,528 of repayment income in 2026–27 and are charged only on income above that threshold.
Super is paid by your employer on top of your salary at 12%. If your offer is a "package including super", tick the box and we split out the super first. Salary sacrifice lowers your taxable income, so it lowers your tax too.
Your pay slip may differ slightly. Employers withhold tax using ATO tax tables, which round and spread tax evenly across pay periods. The difference comes back, or is owed, when you lodge your return.
In 2026–27, $14,520 in income tax plus $1,600 Medicare levy, leaving $63,880 a year, about $2,457 a fortnight. In 2025–26 the same salary took home $63,612.
Is super included in my salary?
Usually not. Most job ads quote a base salary, and your employer pays 12% super on top. If the ad says "package" or "including super", the super is inside that number.
Why is my pay slip different?
Employers use ATO withholding tables, which round each pay. Small differences are settled when you lodge your tax return.
Does HECS come out of my pay?
If you tell your employer you have a study loan, they withhold extra tax to cover the compulsory repayment. The final amount is worked out on your tax return.
