How it's calculated

Each type of hour is paid at your base rate multiplied by a penalty rate. Common award rates are:

  • Overtime: 150% for the first 2 hours, then 200%.
  • Saturday: 125% to 150%. Sunday: 150% to 200%.
  • Public holidays: 225% to 250%.
  • Casuals get a 25% loading instead of paid leave. Most awards apply it on top of the penalty rate, so a casual Sunday rate is often 175%.

Awards differ a lot, so treat these as starting points. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay Calculator shows the exact rates for your award and level.

After-tax pay assumes you work a similar week all year and are an Australian resident claiming the tax-free threshold.

Common questions

What is time and a half?

150% of your base rate. At $30 an hour, time and a half is $45 an hour.

Do casuals get penalty rates?

Yes, under most awards casuals get penalty rates, often calculated on top of the 25% casual loading.

Is overtime taxed more?

No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as your other income. A big week can have more tax withheld, but it evens out at tax time.
